Bell & Bain founded on 4th April 1831 by James Bell and Andrew Bain, is one of the oldest established printing companies still in existence in UK. In 1891, the firm was made a limited company, under the title Bell & Bain Ltd. The company was successfully purchased by the Management Team from the owners Prime Active Capital at the end of 2009. This is seen as a commitment for the future to continue to provide a quality product and service within UK.
Originally founded by James Bell and Andrew Bain, we are now one of the oldest independent book & journal printers and binders in the UK. From our two Scottish production facilities, we service over 600 clients, printing major publications for clients including The Open University, Cambridge University Press, and Oxford University Press amongst others. We are masters of our craft, and we consistently deliver exceptional printing and binding services, making us the printer of choice for many leading publishers, time and time again.
Bell & Bain has a team of over 100 trained and professional staff specialising in the printing and binding of business, educational, financial, medical, scientific and religious books and learned journals. With our two production facilities situated in the South side of Glasgow we are close to major air and rail networks as well as being virtually on the doorstep of the motorway system, we are geographically well placed to serve all the UK and beyond.
We have always been committed to process and product quality, and in 1988, were one of the first printing companies in the UK to achieve British Standard registration under the rigorous standards required by the then BS5750, now ISO 9001:2008. In July 2008 Bell & Bain successfully gained certification with an Environmental Management System under the ISO 14001:2004 standard. To further our commitment to an environmental approach in the production of books and journals 85% of all paper purchased by the company is accredited with FSC Chain of Custody Certification. Our customer requirements are such that over 75% of all printed matter manufactured carries an FSC Chain of Custody claim.
The world has changed in so many ways, and is constantly changing and evolving. We at Bell & Bain do the same, we evolve in technology driven investments, in people skills and in management systems that allow us to both integrate with our customer better and to turn sometimes very complex work around in tight deadlines with industrial efficiency and assurance.
The printed book and journal is still very strong and sits in the communication space very effectively, it co-exists well and often enhances other digital communication platforms.
We are constantly amazed and impressed with the incredible range of printed communication we produce: the educational subject matters; the academic knowledge; the science; the arts; the creativity and the storytelling, and when it is well designed, colourful, with great binding, it has such a positive affect on us all.
At Bell & Bain, we continually invest in the latest printing and binding technologies to stay at the forefront of our industry and meet our clients’ growing needs. With a suite of unique technologies we are able to deliver within tight timeframes and in high volumes, exceeding client expectations and outperforming other printers.
Our continually expanding facilities include ‘World First’ technologies, some of which are unique to Bell & Bain within the UK. Like our Full Colour Fujifilm Jet Press 540W, which in conjunction with Muller Martini, gives a paper reel fed, digital press to finished book, in one pass, a world first.
Our suite of the latest generation of KBA presses includes an 8 colour perfecting press with the highest degree of automation including in-line closed loop colour control, capable of delivering 32pp A4 Signatures in one pass. This press alone prints almost one million sheets per week, and is the only machine of its kind in the UK meaning no other printer can meet this standard, or produce to this distinctive efficiency and quality.
With our latest Alegro 18 Station Muller Martini Adhesive Binding Line, installed with the latest signature recognition system, we can bind up to 20 separate sections plus a cover in just one pass. We believe in providing efficient and cost effective printing and binding services, that give our clients a quality that is unrivalled in the UK. With unique technologies, Bell & Bain can stay that way, and deliver a service second to none.
At Bell & Bain we have adopted the philosophy that our customers requirements and needs are our goals – we listen!
